Video Storage Options
Video Recordings Overview
Storing your videos may depend on the type of recordings. Three types of recordings include:
- Throwaways, quick recordings of simple short video clips used in Canvas to provide announcements and feedback. No long term storage needed.
- Class session videos, usually recorded in Zoom and stored in the cloud. These must be deleted each semester due to CSU privacy guidelines. Also not for long-term storage.
- Lecture videos, longer, more formal recordings that are used repeatedly.
Let's look at where you should not store your videos:
- On Zoom Cloud, if it is for long-term storage.
- On Google drive, where it is not captioned, nor available for streaming, as it must be downloaded to view.
- On Canvas Course files, also where it is not captioned, nor available for streaming, as it must be downloaded to view.
Where should you store your videos?
- If you want to keep your video local, you can use the Canvas Studio tool to upload and store your video recording. Studio works differently than the course files in Canvas.
- You can host videos outside of Canvas and link to them.
- You can upload videos to YouTube or Vimeo
- They provide streaming services with captioning
- Use their share button to get the URL link
- Then in Canvas, use the link button to insert the video onto the page.
