Video Recordings Overview

Storing your videos may depend on the type of recordings. Three types of recordings include:

  1. Throwaways, quick recordings of simple short video clips used in Canvas to provide announcements and feedback. No long term storage needed.
  2. Class session videos, usually recorded in Zoom and stored in the cloud. These must be deleted each semester due to CSU privacy guidelines. Also not for long-term storage.
  3. Lecture videos, longer, more formal recordings that are used repeatedly.

Let's look at where you should not store your videos:

  1. On Zoom Cloud, if it is for long-term storage.
  2. On Google drive, where it is not captioned, nor available for streaming, as it must be downloaded to view.
  3. On Canvas Course files, also where it is not captioned, nor available for streaming, as it must be downloaded to view.

Where should you store your videos?

  1. If you want to keep your video local, you can use the Canvas Studio tool to upload and store your video recording. Studio works differently than the course files in Canvas.
  2. You can host videos outside of Canvas and link to them.
    • You can upload videos to YouTube or Vimeo
    • They provide streaming services with captioning
    • Use their share button to get the URL link
    • Then in Canvas, use the link button to insert the video onto the page.
