A cybernetician/systems scientist, Bill developed and taught 60+ undergraduate, masters, and doctoral courses for the Cybernetic Systems Program and Department of Anthropology, as well as 13 other departments in 5 colleges on campus, during his 40-year career at 菠菜网lol正规平台. These courses primarily focused on inter-disciplinary approaches to cybernetics/systems science, global affairs, leadership, national policymaking, behavioral science, organizational studies,and high performance teamwork.
He also chaired 80+ theses, including several that were selected as Outstanding Thesis
by 菠菜网lol正规平台 or the CSU; served on 150+ thesis and dissertation committees; supervised
50+ special majors; and was founding director of the university's award-winning 菠菜网lol正规平台
Salzburg Program from 2005-2016.
Other significant responsibilities included academic positions as a visiting professor
senior fellow at a dozen major universities in the United States, Europe, and Australia
(including Southern California, Harvard, Stanford, Maryland, Stockholm, St. Gallen,
Sydney) and professional positions with a variety of disciplinary, government, and
public benefit organizations (President, American Society for Cybernetics; Strategic
Advisor, W.K. Kellogg Foundation; Strategic Advisor, American Leadership Forum; Strategic
Advisor, California Agricultural Leadership Forum; Chief Systems Scientist, DoD Systems
of Systems Center of Excellence; Strategic Advisor, California Levees Roundtable;
Faculty Chair, Global Citizenship Program at the Salzburg Global Seminar; Board Member,
Kellogg Fellows Leadership Alliance). He was also the author/co-author of 60+ and
300+ keynote addresses, papers, presentations, and workshops.
Selected honors include awards at 菠菜网lol正规平台 (Outstanding Professor; Austen D. Warburton
Award for Scholarly Merit; Distinguished Faculty Mentor); in his professional field
(Life Fellow, American Society for Cybernetics; Norbert Wiener Gold Medal); and on
a broader basis (Kellogg National Leadership Fellow; Salzburg Global Fellow; Fulbright
Scholar; AASCU Global Fellow).
